Oncology Massage – Online Learning
Oncology Massage Global (OMG) provides Internationally endorsed online learning for massage therapists and care-givers who want to learn how to provide effective and safe massage for those with a diagnosis of cancer. OMG’s courses are registered with the Society for Oncology Massage, the international benchmark for excellence, based in the USA.
The skills learned in our course equip therapists to work with any medically frail client with complex health issues.
Practical skills are presented via video on the teaching platform and can be viewed as often as needed.
The content uses a range of multi-media designed to keep you focused and interested.
Topics are broken up into small presentations so even if you only have a small amount of time, you can easily progress. There are questions and challenges along the way to engage and reinforce your learning, with regular online meetings with the facilitator for discussions, case studies and questions.
The end of the course includes a case study for you to design a full body massage including correct draping, positioning, appropriate length of treatment, the accommodation of medical devices and other vital health considerations.
You will need access to the internet, plus an iphone or similar smartphone for filming and sending your practical sessions.
If you are in a different time zone to Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) please mention this when you make contact with our administrator; we are often able to offer a choice of meeting times.
One-on-one sessions can be booked with the facilitator if required.
The course comprises two modules.
Module 1
Module 1 is the entry level, providing the skills and knowledge to work with patients from diagnosis through all forms of cancer treatment to the end stage of life.
Module 1 comprises 4 units, each including a practical element and each to be completed in a 2-week period. The virtual class will meet online weekly to review the content before proceeding to the next section of the unit. Module 1 is completed within 8 weeks at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Module 1 Content:
- Introduction to the essence of oncology massage, how it differs from remedial massage
- The science of cancer
- How to work effectively and safely with a client receiving chemotherapy, radiation or post-surgical procedure
- The nature of fascia and how cancer treatment impacts the internal matrix
- Working with a compromised lymphatic system
- Oncology Massage intake form
- Draping and Practical methods are provided each fortnight and include various techniques for the whole body, including one with a fully clothed client

Module 2
Module 2 is for registered massage therapists and includes more rigorous assessment with advanced skills.
The prerequisite for Module 2 is the successful completion of all assessments for Module 1.
With the framework established in the first module, therapists expand their ability to work with remedial issues presented by the client who may also be in cancer treatment, including abdominal massage and in-depth scar work.
The successful completion of module 2 enables you to advertise as Oncology Massage Therapist and register with the international Society for Oncology Massage.
Module 2 is broken up into 4 units, each to be completed within a 2 week period, the final of which is a practical assessment.
Module 2 Content:
- Review of the science
- Review of the principles of Oncology Massage
- Case studies for treatment planning & discussion
- Cancer, the emotions and the 4 ‘C’s
- Abdominal massage
- Global fascial release
- Advanced scar treatment
- Supervised treatment of a cancer client
